Chief Financial Officer

Position Reports To: CEO and Founder, Paul Morrissey

Location: Candidates can live in San Antonio, Austin, or within 4 hours of driving to either city. If they live in Dallas, Houston, the Rio Grande Valley, or across other cities within that 4-hour radius, candidates must be willing to drive min. 1 day/week to San Antonio for various engagements with internal and external stakeholders.

YOU HAVE

  • A Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; MBA or CPA preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in a senior finance role, with at least 5 years in a charter school, public school, or mission-driven organization.
  • Expertise in public charter school finance or a closely related sector, including lender credibility (debt management, bond financing, etc.).
  • Strong mission alignment and a passion for working in public education, particularly in underserved communities.
  • Proven track record of managing large-scale budgets (multi-campus or district-wide) and overseeing complex financial systems.
  • Experience with facilities management, real estate planning, and capital improvement projects is a plus.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment, demonstrating flexibility and strategic thinking.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • We are committed to offering a competitive salary that reflects your expertise and experience in school finance. The salary range for this position is $150,000-200,000 and will vary depending on qualifications and experience.

YOUR MISSION

As the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Compass Rose, you will lead all financial aspects of the network and play a critical role in securing our schools' financial sustainability. You will be responsible for developing financial strategies, identifying opportunities to optimize resources, and ensuring that we meet our mission of delivering excellent education to underserved communities. By overseeing budgeting, financial forecasting, and risk management, you will ensure Compass Rose's long-term stability and growth.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy & Leadership

  • As a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, set the financial strategy and priorities for the network to drive organizational success.
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting across all campuses and ensure alignment with Compass Rose's strategic vision.
  • Translate financial strategies into actionable, time-bound goals and collaborate across functions to ensure financial accountability and growth.
  • Develop and manage the finance team, fostering an environment of high performance and continuous learning.
  • Provide financial coaching to school leaders, enabling them to make data-driven decisions that support both short-term and long-term financial goals.

Finance & Business

  • Lead the annual financial planning and budgeting process, collaborating with the CEO and senior leadership to anticipate needs and align resources with priorities.
  • Oversee financial reporting, including compliance with state and federal regulations, TEA reporting, and ensure clean audits through meticulous financial management.
  • Manage relationships with lenders, ensuring lender credibility by handling debt management, facility financing, and overseeing bond-related projects.
  • Ensure robust internal controls are in place to safeguard assets and maintain compliance with financial policies.

Facilities & Real Estate Management

  • Lead financial planning for capital projects, including budgeting, procurement, and funding for new construction, renovations, and long-term maintenance.
  • Assess real estate acquisitions and financing to support the network's growth.
  • Ensure compliance with state and local real estate regulations and oversee capital improvement plans.

Procurement & Risk Management

  • Oversee procurement processes, evaluate vendor contracts, and ensure compliance with purchasing regulations.
  • Lead risk management efforts, ensuring the network proactively anticipates and addresses potential financial, legal, and operational risks.

Compliance & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, especially in grant management and public school financial guidelines.
  • Serve as the key financial liaison to external stakeholders, including auditors, board members, financial institutions, and government agencies.
