Job Summary: Under the administrative direction of the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief performs a variety of technical, administrative, and supervisory work in planning, organizing, directing, and implementing fire prevention suppression and emergency medical services to prevent or minimize the loss of life and property by fire and other hazardous situations. Responds to major incidents and serves as Acting Fire Chief when assigned.Essential Job Functions
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:

1. Plan, coordinate, supervise, and evaluate Fire and EMS operations; recommend policies and procedures for the Fire Department and EMS Department in order to implement directives from the Fire Chief.
2. Plan and implement Fire and EMS programs in order to carry out the policies and goals related to the operation of the department.
3. Plan for and review specifications for equipment.
4. Direct the operations of departmental in-service training activities.

1. Respond to alarms and personally direct activities at the scene of major emergencies.

1. Maintain discipline and the conduct and general behavior of assigned personnel.
2. Inspect existing structures, construction, and remodel sites for compliance with fire codes, as directed; resolve compliance problems with owners within scope of knowledge and authority.
3. Prepare and submit reports to the Fire Chief regarding the Department's activities and prepare a variety of other reports, as appropriate, including an annual report of activities.
4. Perform Performance Appraisals of employees, as appropriate.
5. Assist in the investigation of fire incidents.

1. Plan department's operation with respect to equipment, apparatus and personnel.
2. Assign personnel and equipment to such duties and uses as the service requires.

1. Issue Burn Permits, as appropriate.
2. Calculate water fire flows for building requirements.
3. Attend conferences and meetings to keep abreast of current trends in the field; represents the City Fire/EMS Departments in a variety of local, county, state, and other meetings.

1. Serve as a member of various committees and organizations representing the City in a variety of local, county, state and other meetings.

1. Perform the duties of command personnel as needed and fulfills obligations during duty days or duty weeks.
2. Perform related tasks as required.

Experience Required:5 years of experience in Fire or Emergency Medical Services work, 3 of which must have been equivalent to Fire Lieutenant or higher.
Minimum Education Requirements:Associate's Degree in Fire Studies or closely related field; completion of Firefighter 2 and Fire Officer II within 1 year.; a combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be substituted at the discretion of the City Manager.Essential Functions, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for Employment
