Job Summary

DEFINITION
Under the direction of the Tulsa County Juvenile Bureau (Tulsa County Family Center for Juvenile Justice), and within established policies and guidelines, the Custody and Control Coordinator is responsible for transporting and escorting youth; both restrained and unrestrained from the Detention Home to court and other approved locations. The position requires leadership of custody and control staff, ensuring safe, secure, and professional transportation services.
Job Description
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provide daily leadership of custody and control staff, interns, and volunteers.
  • Assists in the oversight, planning, and review of all transports for court dockets and scheduled youth appointments to ensure timeliness and efficiency.
  • Assist in formal orientation and training of new staff.
  • Secure, according to training and guidelines, youth in mechanical restraints when necessary and as ordered, for transportation outside of the Detention Home.
  • Escort youth to court, accompanying their assigned Counselor or OJA worker when available.
  • Accompany Probation and ISP specialist on high- home visits and school visits to provide oversight and ensure scene safety.
  • Transport youth, both restrained and unrestrained, to medical, dental, placement or mental health services appointments using the county vehicle.
  • Intervene in attempted escape or assaults using the least restrictive forms of intervention, up to and including physical restraint.
  • Complete detailed for all events occurring during transport or escorts.
  • Maintain accurate logs of transports and escorts performed.
  • Coordinate travel within the section and department to maximize efficiency of time and travel.
  • Perform shift work as designated by management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES

Skill in supervising the work of others; understanding the underlying causes of social problems; custody operations procedures and in eliciting pertinent personal information.

Knowledge of personal computers; of the principles and practices of sociology applicable to juvenile casework; of county and state regulations pertaining to juveniles' care; of verbal and nonverbal techniques for de-escalation and communicating clear directives; of physical restraint techniques, as well as safe and functional techniques for applying and removing mechanical restraints; and of departmental policies and procedures.

Ability to work tactfully with others; to establish effective interpersonal relationships; to gain respect and cooperation of others; to stay alert and vigilant; to handle stressful situations; and to create a constructive atmosphere for crisis problem solving.

SUPERVISORY SKILLS

Directly supervises assigned employees in the Probation Department of TCFCJJ. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in sociology, psychology, or a closely related field; and over 2 years experience in working with juveniles.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

COMPUTER SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid OK Driver's License possessed for at least 6 months Defensive driving through Tulsa County within 6 months of hired. First Aid & CPR Certification

CPI Certification or equivalent
